We’re on the Linsanity Bandwagon: Go Jeremy!

Filed under: Asian Hockey Championship — Asian Hockey Championship @ 2:09 am

Your feel good story of the day: Jeremy Lin, the only Asian player currently in the NBA, is proving his chops as a completely unheralded rookie.

53 points in his past two games.

As www.nytimes.com writes:

When the Knicks claimed Lin off waivers Dec. 27, he was fourth on the depth chart at point guard. Now he is No. 1, continuing a long pattern of low expectations and surprising results.

Lin received no college scholarship offers, despite leading his Palo Alto High School team to a 32-1 record and the California championship. At Harvard, he was twice named to the all-Ivy League first team and delivered a signature 30-point performance against 12th-ranked Connecticut.

At draft time, in June 2010, Lin was again overlooked. N.B.A. teams had their doubts — about his defense, about his jump shot, about his ability to keep up with the league’s elite athletes.

They were the kind of concerns scouts have every year about dozens of prospects, from all sorts of programs and all sorts of backgrounds. Yet there was no escaping Lin’s unusual pedigree and the subtle sense that he did not fit a profile.

Your. Worst. Nightmare.

Filed under: Asian Hockey Championship — Asian Hockey Championship @ 4:09 pm

Ok.  We’re not deeply knowledgable football diehards.

Enjoy watching the game, but we don’t live it.

But even we know a nightmare when we see it.

  • 6 foot, 5 inches.
  • 278 pounds.
  • Vertical leap – 30.5 inches.  (Try this test yourself.  Really.  Try it.  If you get more than 15 inches off the ground, you’re a hero.)
  • 40 yard dash – 4.71 seconds.  (this means he could catch you, let you go, catch you again, let you go again, stop to have a burger with fries, then catch you a third time).
  • Hand size – 10.5 inches.

Watch. The. Nightmare.  (Be patient – it comes at the 20 second mark and it just doesn’t stop)

Showcasing Asian Talent

Filed under: Asian Hockey Championship — Asian Hockey Championship @ 10:19 pm

I was recently alerted to a couple of talented young, American Asian singers that are self-publishing on YouTube:

  •  Mr. David So – is there any relation to the multi-talented David So, realtor extraordinaire and long-time player and supporter of the Asian Hockey Championship?  See for yourself; and

This is a very small sample size; there are lots and lots of talented Asian artists, to be sure.

Keeping an eye out for talented Canadian Asian artists as well.

Enjoy!

Fighting Against Fighting in Hockey

Filed under: Uncategorized — Asian Hockey Championship @ 6:46 pm

Interesting article today in the Globe and Mail indicating that USA Hockey is considering upping the ante and cracking down against fighting in their junior hockey programs.

On a related topic, who knew that our Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, was a hockey jock?  He played college hockey at Harvard and was twice selected for the All-American hockey team.  He’s also a member of Harvard’s Athletic Hall of Frame.  Mr. Johnston was interviewed in an article today on the CBC calling for a renewed emphasis on the skill portion of the game and towards making the game safer, including taking out high-sticking, head shots and fighting.

As we all know, the Asian Hockey Championship is a showcase for skill and good sportsmanship of all their participants.  Creativity and competitive spirit, yes.  Fighting, no.

Come join us Friday, May 18, 2012 to Sunday, May 20, 2012 at York University campus for the tournament.

2012 AHC Take Note – The Winnipeg Emperors Are Quietly Preparing

Filed under: Asian Hockey Championship — Asian Hockey Championship @ 3:18 pm

Last year, the Winnipeg Emperors sported an impressive 5-1 tourney record in their debut at the Asian Hockey Championship.

In 2012, we think its best to warn their competitors: Winnipeg’s coming back, re-tooled and even more motivated.

Check out the Winnipeg Emperor’s blog entry in November, 2011, inviting players to undergo an evaluation skate for their 2012 team.  Fierce.

The 2012 Asian Hockey Championship is looking to be the biggest and best yet.  For more information on registering a team or singing up as an individual, email us as asianhockeychampionship@gmail.com. Thanks

2011 Asian Hockey Championship – Gong Hei Phat Boyz

Filed under: Asian Hockey Championship — Asian Hockey Championship @ 2:13 pm

[Editor’s note:  this is a guest blog from photographer, Owen Wong]

2011 Asian Hockey Championship – Gong Hei Phat Boyz

[From Owen's Flickr account, here]

I’m always impressed by the creativity and thought put into team names…

Playing on the Chinese New Year greeting “going hei fat choy” …

This team from Ottawa came to play – they are the Gong Hei Phat Boyz.

This team is comprised of first generation Canadians, whose parents emigrated to Canada for the Toisan villages in China.  Most members are siblings, relatives or childhood friends and came together to form a team to participate in the inaugural Ottawa-Asian Hockey Classic tournament 3 years ago, but have been playing pick up hockey together for over 20 years.

Play on boyz … play on.
